AVB STAGE GENERAL MAKE UP INFORMATION

STAGE MAKE-UP:    All company members including apprentices, adults and dancers 11 years old and up (basically everyone not listed below) will put on their own makeup. See the Make UP Info Sheet below.

Dancers under the age of 12 will have their make-up applied by our make-up people. So they need to arrive at the theater with their hair done, but no make-up on except for mascara. For hygienic reasons, mascara needs to be applied at home before coming to the theatre.

Foundation – crème or liquid works best – select a color that matches your skin tone as closely as possible!

PURPOSE: to create an even tone and to allow all your makeup to stick. Put it all over your face and your neck, also by your ears and BLEND!

Eyebrow Pencil – Dark Brown or Black. Pencils that twist and need no sharpener work best. Use it to pencil in your eyebrow. You can lift you eyebrow and create more space above your eye (making your eyes look bigger) by penciling it in higher than your actual eyebrow.

Highlighter – crème – significantly light in color than skin [recommended: Ben Nye Highlighter or one that comes in a lipstick –like container]. NOTE: for dark skin tones highlighter is more important that shadow and a yellowish tone works best.

PURPOSE:           1. Makes the face 3 dimensional from afar by making the highlighted area stand out toward the audience OR

                              2. Make the highlighted area look larger OR

                              3. Make a crooked nose look straight or visa versa

PUT IT:                1. On top of your cheek bones and blend

                              2. On your eyebrown bone and blend

                              3. dab a finger tip of it on your eyelid and do not blend

                              4. Depending on the shape of your face, etc. you might also put it

                                             a. On your jawbone (blend)

                                             b. As a line down your nose

                                             c. on the tip of your chin

                                             d. dap a fingertip on one of your lips

Shadow – crème – warm brown tones work best [recommended: Ben Nye Cinnamon for most skin colors]

PURPOSE:           1. Makes the face 3 dimensional from afar by making the shaded area recede away from the audience OR

                                             2. Make portions of the face look smaller (ex: nose)

                                             3. Can be used in combination with highlighter to make wrinkles, bruises, & special effects

PUT IT:                1. On the sucked in part of your cheek BLEND!

                                             2. In the crease of your eyelid and just above BLEND!

                                             3. Possibly under your jawbone BLEND!

Lip Pencil – use the same tone as your lipstick, but in a slightly darker shade

PURPOSE: to outline and define the lip

Draw around the lip and color in

Lipstick  - a warm based peach or red (peach for snow scene, red for Act 2)

Powder – Loose translucent powder (baby powder if you are portraying an old person, soldier, doll, etc)

PURPOSE:  Seals the crème makeup on. Prevents sweat streaks, etc.

APPLY  IT:        1. Pour some on a powder puff

                                             2. Pat it all over your face and neck (don’t forget your lips)

                                             3. Use your powder brush to remove excess powder

Eyelashes – you will need 2 pairs: 1 long & 1 bushy. Put them together before putting them on your eyes.

1.      Apply the glue to the eyelash, blow on it for a moment allowing the glue to get sticky.

2.      Apply them at the base of your eyelid.

3.      MEN DO NOT NEED EYELASHES – TAFFY you can simply use mascara

Eyeliner – Cake eyeliner works best.

PURPOSE:  Helps to define the eye

                 APPLY IT:

1. On top of your glued eyelash at the base to cover up the glue.

2. Under your eye starting just beneath your pupil and running out just past the corner of your eye in a horizontal straight line.

3. Blend some watered down in to the crease of your eyelid on top of the shadow you placed there earlier.

Blush – powder – peachy warm color. Apply it on your cheeks and BLEND!

Powder ~ Translucent loose powder ~ put powder on a powder puff and then dab it all over your face, wait a moment and brush off the excess. This will help to set your makeup.

Setting Spray ~ I recommend setting spray at the very end to make sure your make up does not run or smear under your mask!

Brushes – you will need several:

2 small brushes (one slightly bigger than the other – I buy these cheap from Michael’s in the art section)

                 1 powder brush

1 lip brush (lip brush is optional)

Powder Puff ~ pretty large

Sponges – triangular sponges are great for applying shadows and highlights.

Johnson’s Baby Shampoo – the best way to remove your stage makeup. Wash your face with this.
